The Story Behind Dr. Maria Karakoulaki and Dubai’s First Aesthetic Gynaecology Clinic

Long before she became the founder of Gýneco — the UAE’s first dedicated clinic for Aesthetic and Functional Gynaecology — Dr Maria Karakoulaki was a little girl in ballet shoes, dreaming of the stage.

That dream didn’t survive. Neither did her backup plan to become an actress, even after she secretly enrolled in drama school while completing her medical residency, pulling 24-hour hospital shifts and then heading straight to acting class. It was one extraordinary night — playing a doctor on stage while treating a real pregnant patient struggling with addiction in her actual job — that made the decision for her once and for all.

Two decades, thousands of deliveries, and one bold move to Dubai later, Dr Karakoulaki has built something the region had never seen before: a clinic that treats the parts of women’s health most doctors are never even trained to talk about.

She was the first to bring body-identical hormone replacement therapy to Dubai. She’s helped women navigate everything from post-birth recovery to menopause to the most intimate health concerns that traditional gynaecology simply waves away. And she did it all while facing down an “old-man dominated” medical culture and no shortage of backstabbing along the way.

Her philosophy is simple, and it’s one she repeats to every woman who walks through her doors:

“There are solutions and there is hope, for everything.”
